I live out here in Saugus, Ca., In the Santa Clarita valley 50 miles north of Los Angeles. The population is around 173,000 the last time I checked the Census Dept. There are a lot of neat things out here. Magic Mountain is a fun place to go.. The Saugus Cafe is a nice old time cafe. It's been used in a lot of movies over the years! I lived out here several years ago and liked it so much when we decided to buy a house the wife (KE6FPP) and my self started looking in the areas with no CC+R's..... So here we are.

6M AM 50.400

Bill WA6ITF and myself have been doing a "fun test" on 50.400 AM. What we are going, is when the band opens up we are going to call CQ on 50.400 AM and see if "AM" holds up as well as "SSB"! Be sure to check out my 50AM page! Let me know what you think of it.

The equipment I'm using is a Clegg Zeus/ Interceptor, Cushcraft ARX-6, and a 5 elem. beam. I use the Zeus and Interceptor for the SCV 6M AM net held on Sunday Mornings at 09:00 PT. If you live locally in the LA area join in on the fun or when the band is open PLEASE check in! I also run Newsline on the net as well as dx reports!

If you have any AM gear for 6M please get on 50.400 AM. The more people the better. Plus working DX on AM is a blast!

The Gonset G-50 sure was the prettiest radio I have ever seen! All white and 2 half moon windows. All the audio reports have been very good! I used a old high-imp. D-104. This radio even has a squelch knob. And the squelch works good! The G-50 puts out around 27W AM.

I have a Heath "Sixer" lunch box, cute little radio!. This radio is 5w input AM Xtal transceiver using Heising type (choke coupled) plate/screen modulation. Audio is superb. and sold in kit form by Heathkit from 1959 to 1965 selling originally for $29.95!

Be sure to look at my 50mhz AM page for more info on 6M AM.

6M SSB

is a mode that is full of surprises and is a lot of fun. I mostly use my MFJ 9460 and a home built 811A amp for DX on SSB. I found on the internet a Sure mike Made for Swan way back when. I now have around 200 confirmed QSL's on 6M and received my VUCC #1009 from the ARRL back in March of 1999.

As for the antennas, I have a Cushcraft 5 elem. beam and just got a 6 elem. beam ,and a Cushcraft ARX-6 Vert.

It will be a lot of fun to see what conditions we get this winter (1999). All and all the summer of 1997 was poor at best, 1998 seemed better. Summer of 1999 so far is better than the last few years.

I'm having a blast on 6M. If you ever get a chance to get a 6M ssb rig "Get one". You don't need a lot of power or even a SSB rig, I've worked many states on fm mobile 52.525 with a Radio Shack 2m 5/8 mag mount antenna! There are some good 6M kits and transverters out there also.

6M has been very good to us this summer (1998). On the VHF reflector I have seen west coast working Japan and east coast working England.. Not to shabby. I worked up into Alaska (KL7NO) one July night in 1997. That was the highlight of the summer for me. I also worked a lot further east this summer than I did last year. NY was the farthest east I've worked so far.....

6M FM

6 meters is the "MAGIC BAND". The propagation is very good when the band opens up. You don't need to spend a lot of money for a 6 meter rig. I started with a old Motorola motrack 4 channel x-tal rig that I got for under $100.00. Jim N7HQZ was nice enough to sell it to me! It puts out about 100 watts on a good day. All I had to do was get all the dust off of it and get some xtals cut for it then I was on the air! To this day I still use it in my shack.

A good place for x-tals is MH Electronics(1-800-mhextal). There is a lot of very nice people down here on 6M.. N6BKL has a VERY nice repeater system (CARS System) that is linked to AZ via Fraser peak repeater. There is a "net" on every Thursday night at 19:30 local PT. Dan does not allow checkins though. Too many problems with quick keying through the link and many many checkins. So if your going through NV or CA look up the "FRA" repeater is on 52.560 pl 88.5 -500 khz. I now have a Uniden 602C 50w 36 ch in the car. You can fine me on 52.525 or Dan's repeater "Frazer Mtn" if you are in the area.

And don't forget if you have a no-code tech license you can get on 6M and enjoy the fun!

The TRW swap meet is good a good place to buy and sell those old and new radios.

You can often catch me on 52.525 FM simplex or 50.125 SSB.

Here is a list of some great places to visit....
